I took a week to reflect and revisit all my faves from 2019, but now we’re back baby! And kicking it off with a 90s Grammy award-winning classic from the absurdly talented and tumultuous Fugees, The Score. I knew a few of these songs very well already, “Killing Me Softly With His Song” and “Ready or Not” (recently featured in a Peloton commercial in a possible attempt to make up for their previous misgivings? Thank god for Ryan Reynolds. Anyways…)
But I was surprised by how familiar the rest of it sounded to someone who definitely didn’t listen to it upon its initial release (I was four at the time), and whose primary point of reference for Lauryn Hill is the 1993 cult-classic Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit (ignore the whopping 7% on Rotten Tomatoes, this movie is amazing). See her in this gorg scene but especially this pivotal finale number.
Anyways, I had a great time with this album and am excited to get deeper into their history and subsequent careers this year. Read more about the group and this album here.
